What you get with Colorbond
Colorbond fencing is made from COLORBOND steel, BlueScope's Australian-made pre-painted steel. Ribbed steel sheets, called infill panels, slot between steel posts and into rails, the channels along the top and bottom. The whole fence is one colour. BlueScope says it won't rot or be eaten by termites, and there's nothing to paint.

Our installers carry insurance. Each installer on your job holds insurance for the fencing work.
Gates can match the fence. We hang Colorbond side and driveway gates on heavier hinge posts set in concrete, with latches you can lock.
We take the old fence away.Add a line about it to the form notes, and the old panels and posts come down and go to the tip with us.
You can add a wall underneath. If the ground is higher on one side, a sleeper retaining wall can hold the soil back. The fence is fixed along its top in the one job.
Parts can be replaced later.Dented sheets, bent rails and loose posts can be swapped with parts from the current Colorbond range.
Colorbond colours
BlueScope's core fencing range has 15 colours, from the pale cream of Surfmist to the near-black of Monument.
Screen and printed colours never quite match the steel, so look at a physical sample before you decide.

Same colour on both sides
Sheets, posts and rails share one colour, so next door sees the shade you pick. BlueScope says painting one side voids its warranty.
Colours outside the core 15
BlueScope notes a supplier may stock colours beyond the core range. Name the one you're after in the form notes.
Next to an older fence
A sheet from today's range won't be an exact match for steel that has spent years in the sun.

Colorbond panels are commonly made 1.5 m, 1.8 m or 2.1 m tall.
Sunbury is in Hume, where side and back fences over 2 m need a building permit, so a 2.1 m fence needs one.
Panel styles
- Standard ribbed panels.
- Panels that look the same from both sides, so neither yard gets the back of the fence.
- Slat and louvre screens with gaps for air, usually in fewer colours.
- A slat or lattice strip along the top that lets light through.
| Height | Where it's used | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| 1.5 m | Where it's used: Lower boundaries and fences near the street | What to know: Hume's no-permit limit for fences less than 3 m from the street. |
| 1.8 m | Where it's used: Most side and back boundaries | What to know: Under Hume's 2 m permit line. |
| 2.1 m | Where it's used: Screening from a neighbour's two-storey home | What to know: Over 2 m, which means a building permit in Hume. |

Sloping blocks and posts
A sloping block or rock in the ground changes how the posts go in.
On a slope
A Colorbond panel is level along its top, so on a falling block each panel steps down from the last. We check the slope when we measure up and show the steps on your quote.
Posts in concrete
Colorbond posts have a different metal coating, made for setting in concrete. BlueScope says concrete mustn't touch the rails or sheets, so each footing, the concrete around a post's base, finishes under the bottom rail.
Rock in the post holes
Rock in a post hole gets noted on site, and the quote spells out how it'll be handled.

Colorbond fence costs
Your price comes from the length plus these choices.
Pushes the price up
- Panels over 1.8 m, and the building permit that comes with going past 2 m
- A colour outside the core range
- Slat or lattice tops, or slat and louvre panels
- Gates, with their heavier posts and hardware
- Rock underground, or a steeply falling block
- A narrow side path, where every sheet is carried in by hand
Helps keep it down
- One height along the whole run
- A colour from the core 15
- A clear, flat path to where the fence goes
- Sharing a boundary fence's cost with next door (how the split works)
Before you order
An estate or a shared boundary can change what you're able to build.
Your estate's guidelines
Everley doesn't permit Colorbond, while Kingsfield and Maplestone call for capped timber palings. New estate fencing
The neighbour and the council
A boundary fence is normally shared with next door, and land near Jacksons Creek or a heritage place can trigger a planning permit. Sunbury fence rules
Hume City Council or your estate will know the rules for your address.
Colorbond fencing questions
Height and estate rules depend on your block, so check yours before work starts.

Up to 2 m on a side or back boundary without a building permit in Hume. Go taller, say to 2.1 m, and you'll need a permit first. Less than 3 m from the street, the no-permit limit is 1.5 m.

Colorbond, if you want full privacy and no painting. The solid sheets leave no gaps, and BlueScope says rot and termites don't affect the steel. Timber suits a natural look, with a stain or paint every so often. Check your estate first: Everley doesn't allow Colorbond at all, and Kingsfield and Maplestone want capped palings.

Yes, for the parts alone, because the parts are all a store sells you. An installed quote also covers concreting the posts, fitting the rails and sheets, and cleaning off steel filings that can leave rust marks. That's why the two prices don't compare like for like.
The steel has a metal coating of aluminium, zinc and magnesium under a baked-on paint finish. Small rust-coloured spots on a new fence are often swarf, the filings left from cutting steel. BlueScope says installers should clean it off.

Rain does most of the cleaning. BlueScope suggests hosing down any parts the rain misses at least every six months, using mild soapy water on stubborn dirt. It advises against touch-up paint, which weathers differently and can leave patches.
