What we install around your pool

We fit glass or aluminium pool fencing, with gates that shut and latch by themselves. In Victoria, any pool or spa with room for more than 30 cm of water needs a safety barrier and council registration, children or not. A registered inspector or building surveyor checks the barrier. Every four years you lodge a new certificate of barrier compliance, the form saying it passed.

  • We install glass pool fencing.Clear glass panels let you see the whole pool from the house, the deck or the lawn.

  • We install aluminium pool fencing too.The aluminium is powder-coated, meaning the paint is baked on.

  • Pool gates close themselves. The gate hardware we fit pulls each pool gate shut and latches it whenever it's let go.

  • We take the old pool fence away.Replacing an old pool fence? Mention it in the form notes, and we'll haul the old one away to the tip when the new one goes in.

  • We repair pool gates. We fit new hinges to pool gates that no longer close or latch properly, and rehang gates that have dropped.

  • Our installers carry insurance.Insurance covers each installer on your pool fence job.

Glass pool fencing in Sunbury

A glass pool fence keeps the water in sight from inside the house and from the alfresco area.

Glass panels are usually held at the base by spigots, short steel clamps fixed into the paving or a concrete footing.

Good for

  • Watching the pool from the kitchen or the deck
  • Keeping a garden or a view open around the water
  • Tiled and paved pool surrounds

Keep in mind

  • Glass shows splash marks and fingerprints, so it needs a regular wipe.
  • Barrier glass has to meet AS 1288, the Australian Standard for glass in buildings.
  • Pivot hinges on a glass gate mustn't give a child a foothold to climb.
  • CHOICE notes glass can cost a lot more than metal pool fencing.

Aluminium pool fencing

Aluminium pool fencing is a row of upright bars between a top and bottom rail, with a powder-coated finish.

It suits pools set in lawn or garden, where the posts go straight into the ground.

Good for

  • Pools surrounded by lawn or garden beds
  • An open-looking fence that lets the breeze through

Keep in mind

  • On a fence under 1.8 m, rails a child could climb must be at least 900 mm apart.
  • CHOICE suggests checking now and then for loose bars or panels.

Pool gates and latches

A pool gate has to swing shut on its own from any open position and latch without anyone touching it.

Some gate faults fail an inspection on the spot. If a gate won't close fully, an inspector issues a certificate of non-compliance straight away. The same goes if a small child who can't reach the latch can still get the gate open.

Looking after the gate

  • Open the gate wide, let it go, and check it closes and latches every time.
  • Keep the gate shut unless someone is walking through it.
  • If it starts to drag or stops latching, book a repair straight away.
  • Move pot plants, chairs and barbecues well away from the outside of the fence. The barrier rules set a 900 mm clear zone there.

Pool barrier rules in Victoria

The Building and Plumbing Commission, which used to be the Victorian Building Authority, publishes a barrier checklist for pools built from 1 May 2010.

An older pool follows the standard in force when it was built, and council confirms which one applies after you register.

What the barrier needs (pools from 1 May 2010)

  • At least 1.2 m high, with no more than 100 mm between the bottom of the barrier and the ground.
  • Gaps between upright bars, palings or panels of 100 mm or less.
  • A non-climbable zone, a 900 mm space measured from the top of the barrier on the outside, kept clear of anything a child could climb.
  • Self-closing, self-latching gates.
  • No door from the house or garage opening straight into the pool area.

The building permit

Unless the work is exempt, a building permit is required before a new pool barrier goes in. The owner appoints a registered building surveyor to issue it.

Inspection and the certificate

After the inspection, you lodge the certificate with Hume City Council within 30 days. A new one is due every four years.

Which standard applies depends on the year your pool went in. Your building surveyor can confirm it.

How a pool fence job works

A new pool and a replacement fence follow the same five steps.

  1. Tell us about the pool

Glass or aluminium, roughly how many metres of fence, how many gates, and whether an old fence is coming out.

  2. We measure up

An installer looks at what the fence fixes to, where the gates go and what sits near the fence line.

  3. A quote in writing

It lists the panels or bars, the posts or spigots, the gates and their hardware.

  4. Your surveyor and the permit

For a new barrier, the building surveyor you appoint issues the permit before work starts and inspects the finished fence.

  5. The install

With the permit in place, we install the fence and hang the gates.

Pool fencing costs

We price each pool fence from its own measurements, and these six things change the figure.

  • Glass or aluminium

The material, and for glass, the fittings that hold each panel.

  • Length and corners

More metres and more corners mean more panels and posts.

  • Gates

Each gate adds a hinge post and its own hardware.

  • What it fixes to

Fixing into paving or tiles is a different job from setting posts in lawn or soil.

  • Slope

A yard that falls away needs the fence set to follow the ground.

  • The old fence

We take the old pool fence out first and off to the tip.

Pool fencing questions

Barrier rules depend on when your pool was built, so check yours with Hume City Council or your building surveyor.

Yes. Council registration is compulsory for every pool and spa able to hold over 30 cm of water. Relocatable and inflatable pools count too, if they stay up three or more days in a row.

Both can meet the barrier rules, because it's the height, gaps, clear zone and gate hardware that count. Glass keeps the view open but needs wiping more often. Aluminium suits lawn and garden edges and is generally the cheaper of the two.

More than aluminium, as a rule. CHOICE notes glass can cost a lot more than metal pool fencing. Your figure then rests on the panel count, the fittings holding each panel, the gates and what the fence fixes into. The free quote lists each one.

Source: CHOICE: how to buy the best pool fence (opens in a new tab)

Less than glass, generally. The exact figure depends on the metres of fence, the gates and corners, and whether the posts go into soil or paving. Want glass priced too? Put both on the one quote and compare them.

Source: CHOICE: how to buy the best pool fence (opens in a new tab)

Yes. Every pool gate we hang has self-closing, self-latching hardware.

Four kinds of registered practitioner can: a building surveyor, building inspector, pool inspector or municipal building surveyor. You've got 30 days to lodge the certificate they give you, or it has to be done again.

Source: Building and Plumbing Commission: pool and spa inspections (opens in a new tab)

Hume's guidance says fixing problems an inspector found usually needs no building permit. A permit is needed if the work replaces more than half the barrier or changes its posts or footings. The same goes for a different material, or a change to the area it encloses.

Source: Hume City Council: do I need a building permit? (opens in a new tab)

Yes, in glass or aluminium. We'll take the old fence out and away to the tip, so put that in your notes. Hume's guidance says you'll need a building permit to replace over half the barrier.
