Two councils in Tullamarine

Tullamarine is split between two councils, mostly along Sharps Road. Which side you're on decides whose fence rules and help apply.

North of Sharps Road, mostly

Hume City Council

The houses are on this side, around Melrose Drive, Mickleham Road and Dawson Street, along with commercial land.

  • Building permit for a boundary fence more than 2 m tall on the side or back.
  • A fence shared with a council park or reserve may qualify for help with the cost.

Sharps Road

South of Sharps Road, mostly

Brimbank City Council

This side is mainly industrial, around Tullamarine Park Road, Assembly Drive and Allied Drive, with the Western Ring Road through it.

  • Brimbank's guideline counts any trellis or screen on top as part of the fence height.
  • Barbed wire along a street boundary calls for a building permit.

A sliver on the eastern edge is in Merri-bek. Not sure which council is yours? Your rates notice names it.

Commercial fencing in Tullamarine

Warehouses, transport yards and storage lots each need something slightly different from a fence.

  • Yards you can see into

Chain mesh keeps a yard locked up and still lets you see in. If you want it screened later, privacy slats can be woven through.

  • Yards you'd rather hide

Colorbond hides bins, pallets and loading docks from the road and from the houses over the fence.

  • Steelwork and wiring

When a gate needs custom welding, heavy footings or a motor, our installers bring in a welder, concreter or electrician.

Past 2 m along the side or back of the block, a commercial fence calls for a building permit, whichever side of Sharps Road it's on.

Fences near Steele Creek

Melbourne Airport sits on Tullamarine's northern edge, and Steele Creek runs south from it towards Keilor.

Landscape overlays, extra planning rules for how land looks, follow Steele Creek in both councils, and close to the creek most new fences need planning approval. Once you're past the 50 m mark from the bank's upper edge, these are exempt:

  1. open rural fencing like chain mesh or post and wire, 1.4 m tall or less
  2. fencing that's at least 50% see-through and lower than 1.8 m

Overlays are mapped address by address. A VicPlan property report shows which ones are on yours.

Street, pool and council-land rules in Tullamarine

Before a house or business fence goes in, check these rules with your council.

Next to the street
Closer than 3 m to the street, timber or steel fencing past 1.5 m calls for a building permit, as does brick or concrete past 1.2 m.Source: Hume City Council: Fencing and Retaining Walls (opens in a new tab)
Pool barriers
Brimbank's guideline lists every pool safety barrier as needing a building permit.Source: Brimbank fencing guideline, reviewed 2017 (PDF) (opens in a new tab)
Fences beside Brimbank council land
Brimbank doesn't have to pay towards these, but its guidelines allow a contribution. You'll need two independent quotes and council's approval before work starts.Source: Brimbank City Council: fencing (opens in a new tab)

Chain mesh keeps a yard secure and leaves it in view, which suits parking and storage. Colorbond hides what's behind it, so it suits loading areas next to homes or a busy road.

Yes. We install tracked sliding gates and can automate new or existing ones, with a licensed electrician connecting the motor.

It can. The Fences Act doesn't require Brimbank to contribute, but its guidelines allow it. You'll need two independent written quotes and council approval before work begins.
